The Lover archetype dresses for pleasure and connection: rich textures, warm colour and shapes that flatter the body. Think silk, lace and soft drape, delicate gold jewellery and colours from rose to deep red. Underneath the style is a simple wish: to be close to people, and to enjoy beauty without apology.

When I worked as a stylist, body type and colour analysis were never enough on their own. Two clients could share the same colouring and still need completely different wardrobes, because their personalities were different. That's why I started working with the 12 archetypes. The Lover lives for connection, beauty and deep, sincere relationships. Lovers want to be cherished, and to surround themselves with people, work and things they truly love. Their warmth makes others feel seen, special and alive.

• Superpower: making people feel deeply seen and valued
• Trap: losing yourself to please others

Strengths

Lovers are warm, loyal and emotionally present. They have a fine sense of beauty and notice details others miss: the texture of a fabric, the light in a room, the way a colour changes a face. They bring passion to everything, from relationships to work, food and art.

Shadow side

When the need for closeness turns into a defence, love can become dependence. A Lover under stress may become jealous, need constant reassurance or avoid conflict to keep the peace. The quieter sign is changing your opinions, and your clothes, to match the people you're with.

How others see the Lover

People usually experience Lovers as charismatic, romantic and generous. Sometimes they read them as too emotional or self-indulgent, especially in cultures that value restraint. In style, that tension shows up as a question many Lovers ask me: is this too much?

Flowing, draped fabrics like silk, chiffon, and organza can be especially effective at creating this effect, while still allowing for a sense of freedom and ease. Sheer, transparent, and translucent fabrics, as well as lace details, can all be beautiful ways to capture the essence of the Lover archetype in your outfits. These materials and details allow you to showcase a hint of skin and create a sense of mystery and allure, without revealing too much or appearing overly provocative. (Even thought the Lover can showcase this side too!)

Consider incorporating pieces like a flowy dress in a soft pastel shade, a silk blouse with romantic detailing, or a pair of wide-leg trousers with a high waist to capture the essence of the Lover archetype. When it comes to color, shades of red, pink, and peach can be especially effective at evoking feelings of passion and romance, while still complementing a range of skin tones and coloring.

The Lover archetype often gravitates towards styles that showcase bare skin and draw attention to sensual parts of the body. For example, a flowing silk camisole with delicate lace detailing can be a beautiful way to showcase a bare shoulder, while a backless dress can create a stunning and dramatic effect while still maintaining a sense of elegance and sophistication. When it comes to accessories, delicate pieces like a simple gold chain or a pair of drop earrings can add a touch of understated glamour to your look, without overpowering the sensuality of your outfit.

Ultimately, the key is to choose pieces that make you feel confident, beautiful, and connected to your own sensuality and desires, creating a style that truly embodies the essence of the Lover archetype.

Most people lead with two or three archetypes. If the Lover is one of yours, here's how it changes with a partner:

• Lover + Ruler: a silk blouse under sharp tailoring. Polished authority with warmth underneath.
• Lover + Sage: soft, high-quality knits in muted rose and cream. Quiet romance instead of drama.
• Lover + Jester: a romantic dress with a playful accessory, like bold earrings or a bright bag.

As a psychologist, I often see the Lover's shadow side in the wardrobe first.

• Dressing only to please someone else. If every outfit is chosen for a partner's or boss's approval, your own taste disappears. Ask: would I wear this if no one were looking?
• Hiding the Lover at work. Many Lovers switch to grey and black for the office because they worry that softness looks unprofessional. Keep one Lover element, like silk, a warm colour or fine gold, and the outfit will look more like you and more confident.
• Too much at once. Lace, a print, ruffles and a strong colour in one outfit compete with each other. Choose one statement and let the rest support it.
